Dahua 3 lenses camera

Dahua Triple-Lens Security Camera Review: Smart Innovation

Anyone familiar with traditional security setups knows the awkward sight of multiple cameras clustered together, all pointed at the same direction. This is a common solution to one persistent challenge: capturing a wide area in sufficient detail. Installers often use three cameras: wide, medium, and telephoto, to cover a scene at varying zoom levels. While effective, this approach creates technical complexity, requiring multiple recording channels, extra cabling, power connections, and, perhaps most noticeably, a cluttered look.

This was the reason I asked Dahua’s DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE, for review. It’s a compact, innovative solution combining three lenses in a single, elegant unit, delivering full coverage without the visual or technical chaos of three separate cameras.

About Dahua

Founded in 2001 in China, Dahua has grown into one of the two global leaders in video surveillance and security systems. Investing billions in R&D, the company leads the industry in AI-powered video analytics, facial recognition, and real-time intelligent monitoring. In many countries, Dahua maintains an official branch with local development staff, ensuring high-quality support and service.

DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE: Triple Lenses, Single Body

Once I unpacked the DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE, the innovation was clear. The camera houses three separate lenses, each with a different zoom:

  • Panoramic: 3.6 mm, for wide coverage
  • Medium: 12 mm, for detailed observation
  • Telephoto: 25 mm, for precise long-distance focus

Each lens is powered by a 2MP CMOS sensor, capturing 1080p video at 25fps. Together, they provide detailed images across all three fields of view, covering everything from broad spaces to close-up detail directly beneath the camera. Furthermore, the camera includes a powerful internal speaker and a high-quality microphone, which allow for free conversation via the app, as well as the ability to play pre-recorded voice recordings, to be played per analytics scenario.

Its added value is particularly evident in dealing with a Tripwire crossing. For example, if a person crosses an imaginary line, a personalized voice alert will be triggered such as “This is private territory,” etc. The voice alert can also be accompanied by a colored LED light indicator that will make it clear that the person invading a prohibited area is being photographed.

The camera is split vertically: to the left all three lenses, an to the right are eight infrared LEDs and a white light that allows full color imaging even at night. Combined with WDR 120 dB, the camera performs excellently in challenging lighting conditions.

The camera is designed as weatherproof, and features a unique design detail that the entire optical unit can be tilted vertically separately from the camera body, so there is no need to unscrew all the screws to make minor vertical adjustments. Additionally, a microSD slot allows for local backup, ensuring footage is preserved even if the network recorder fails.

It compresses video using H.265, reducing file sizes significantly compared to H.264 while preserving image quality, a critical feature given the three simultaneous streams.

Installation Experience

Dahua addresses common installation headaches with a dedicated junction box (DH-PFA124) designed to integrate seamlessly with the camera. The camera’s screws attach directly to the front of the junction box, keeping cables neatly contained and maintaining a clean, professional appearance.

Power is delivered via a single PoE (Power over Ethernet) cable, providing both electricity and data. While the camera supports separate power lines and line-in/out for external microphones or speakers, the PoE setup alone is sufficient for full operation. This approach reduces cabling complexity significantly compared to installing three separate cameras.

If you have read my other smart security camera reviews, you have probably noticed my reference to the unaesthetic phenomenon of installing a plastic junction box next to the camera, which spoils the aesthetics in order to save a few dollars. That’s why I was happy to discover that this unique camera has a dedicated junction box, model DH-PFA124, which is perfectly adapted to the back of this camera. In fact, the camera’s screws are screwed directly to the front of the junction box, making its front an integral part of it. This way, it is very easy to store the wiring and maintain aesthetics in the installation. Therefore, all that was left for me was to connect the camera’s network cable, roll the wiring inside and close the screws.

The result is a clean installation, without unnecessary drilling on the exterior wall, and the ability to direct the camera to any side, without encountering a junction box next to it. In a standard installation on an exterior concrete wall, the DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE camera is designed to overlook parking lots adjacent to a home or business. I installed the camera near our parking lot setup, so that it would capture every vehicle accurately. The panoramic lens provides a broad overview, the medium lens allows for license plate or object recognition, and the telephoto lens focuses sharply on individual vehicles or objects. Even with high-zoom telephoto shots, the AI analytics maintain tracking accuracy.

To fine tune that camera, a Micro-PTZ mechanism allows to tilt the lenses from +5° to -10° relative to the mounting, enabling precise adjustments without disassembling the unit.

AI Analytics and Intelligent Alerts

Once connected to a Dahua NVR (tested with NVR5208-EI), I was able to configure each lens individualy, or combined for a multi-view display. The target object is centered within two on-screen red boxes, ensuring accurate focus, especially when using the telephoto lens. These visual markers help maintain the object in frame across all three zoom levels.

The DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE includes advanced AI analytics through Dahua’s WizMind platform, capable of differentiating humans from vehicles. Users can define restricted areas, virtual tripwires, or zones of unusual activity. For example, the camera can trigger alerts if a car blocks a driveway, enters a no-entry zone, or crosses a restricted line.

Alerts can be accompanied by a pre-recorded voice message through the built-in speaker, and an LED light can visually warn intruders. The camera’s intelligent analytics minimize false alarms, providing reliable alerts only for genuine events. Schedules can be set to activate alerts only during specific hours, tailoring security monitoring to real-world usage patterns.

Installation is straightforward, the interface intuitive, and the Micro-PTZ ensures precise tuning post-installation. Users with limited experience in surveillance systems can achieve professional-level results without additional infrastructure.

This combination of design, durability, and intelligence sets the DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE apart. It is the first solution I saw in the market to integrate three distinct optical paths into a single compact unit while offering advanced analytics previously reserved for enterprise or governmental installations.

Conclusion

The DH-IPC-MFW5241T2-E3-ASE is a game-changing surveillance camera for private and commercial applications. By combining three lenses into one, Dahua reduces installation complexity, cabling, and visual clutter. Its AI analytics, Micro-PTZ adjustment, PoE convenience, and robust weatherproof design create a complete solution for monitoring wide areas with precision.

For anyone seeking comprehensive coverage, high-quality imaging, and intelligent security features without sacrificing aesthetics or ease of installation, this Dahua camera delivers impressively. It represents a clear technological edge in the market, offering functionality and sophistication that competitors have yet to match.
