Nearly every household in America owns at least one TV. Millions of new televisions are sold every year and screen sizes continue to grow. Also, streaming consumption keeps rising, and demand remains remarkably resilient. Yet behind the industry’s impressive sales numbers lies a surprising reality. So why TV manufacturering profitability is low?

Over the past two decades, some of the most respected names in consumer electronics have either exited the business, outsourced production, or dramatically reduced their involvement. Pioneer disappeared, Philips gave up manufacturing, Panasonic stepped back and now Sony, one of the most iconic television brands ever created, has chosen to partner with TCL in a move that many industry observers view as another sign of a deeper structural problem.

The obvious question is this:

How can one of the most popular consumer products on Earth be such a difficult business?

The real enemy wasn’t poor management, bad engineering or lack of innovation. The force that slowly reshaped the industry was commoditization. As televisions became better, cheaper and more reliable, consumers stopped viewing them as technological marvels and started treating them like household appliances.

Once that happened, price became the dominant factor in purchasing decisions, and when price becomes king, profitability becomes the first casualty.

The answer reveals one of the harshest economic realities in consumer electronics.

The Day Sony Blinked

When reports emerged that Sony would form a television joint venture controlled by TCL, many industry observers viewed it as a shocking moment. Sony wasn’t exiting televisions entirely. Its brand, image processing technologies, and engineering expertise remain central to the new venture.

But the symbolism was impossible to ignore.

Sony is one of the last surviving Japanese television champions. For years, it succeeded where others failed by focusing on premium products and extracting higher margins from customers willing to pay for superior image quality.

Yet even Sony ultimately concluded that manufacturing televisions independently no longer made economic sense. TCL’s enormous manufacturing scale, supply-chain advantages, and cost efficiencies became too powerful to ignore.

If Sony cannot make television manufacturing sufficiently attractive on its own, what does that say about the industry?

Quite a lot.

The Graveyard of Television Giants

Sony is not alone. Earlier in 2026, Panasonic announced that Chinese manufacturer Skyworth would take over production, distribution, and sales responsibilities for Panasonic-branded televisions across major markets including North America and Europe. Panasonic remains involved in design and quality control, but manufacturing itself has moved elsewhere.

Before Panasonic came Philips.

Many consumers don’t realize that Philips televisions are no longer produced by Philips itself. Years ago, the Dutch company effectively exited direct television manufacturing, licensing the business to Hong Kong-based TPV Technology, which now produces Philips-branded televisions.

Before Philips came Pioneer.

Pioneer once built some of the most respected televisions ever made. Its Kuro plasma displays remain legendary among videophiles even today. Yet despite producing arguably the best televisions in the world, Pioneer could not make the economics work and eventually shut down its television business.

Notice the pattern: the companies that disappeared weren’t technological failures. They were often engineering leaders, so the problem wasn’t innovation. It was profitability.

Televisions Have Become Victims of Their Own Success

The first paradox of the television market is that televisions have become too good.

Think about how consumers buy TVs today: A family purchases a 65-inch television, and that television may remain in the living room for seven, eight, or even ten years. Televisions are not replaced like smartphones every two or three years, or require constant maintenance as automobiles.

Televisions have become durable commodities, so ironically, every improvement in reliability reduces future sales opportunities. Consumers simply don’t need to upgrade frequently enough, and that creates a difficult reality: manufacturers must compete aggressively for a limited number of replacement purchases.

Price Wars Destroy TV Manufacturering Profitability

The second problem is even more severe: consumers love televisions, but hate paying premium prices for them. A shopper walking into a retail store may compare five televisions with similar screen sizes, with a price range of 500$ and a 2000$. While their picture quality difference may be substantial, it’s not neccesarily captured in consumer perception.

As televisions became more mature technologically, consumers increasingly began shopping by size and price rather than engineering sophistication, and this triggered years of brutal price competition.

To offer more competitive pricing, manufacturers frequently operate with razor-thin margins on television hardware. Industry analysts have long noted that television profitability is dramatically lower than profitability in smartphones, software, gaming platforms, or subscription services.

In many cases, companies earn more from the ecosystem around the television than from the television itself.

TV Manufacturering Profitability Leads to a Scale Game

Television manufacturing now resembles the airline industry: scale wins and everyone else struggles. Building televisions requires massive investments in display technology, supply chains, logistics networks, assembly facilities, semiconductor procurement, and panel sourcing. So the larger your production volume, the lower your costs.

This is precisely where Chinese manufacturers changed the game. Companies like TCL, Hisense, and Skyworth built enormous manufacturing ecosystems capable of producing televisions at volumes few competitors could match.

As production scale increased, costs fell, which allows prices to fall. And when prices fall, traditional manufacturers find themselves trapped. They can either lower prices and sacrifice TV manufacturing profitability, or maintain premium pricing and lose market share.

Neither option is attractive.

Technology Is Getting More Expensive, Not Less

Consumers often assume that television technology eventually becomes cheaper. While that’s true to some extent, staying competitive requires constant reinvestment.

Consider the technological transitions manufacturers have navigated over the past two decades:

Plasma

LCD

LED

Full-array local dimming

Quantum Dot

Mini-LED

OLED

QD-OLED

Advanced AI image processing

Every generation requires billions of dollars in research, development, tooling, testing, and manufacturing adaptation, and consumers don’t necessarily reward every innovation with higher spending. So while manufacturers spend more, customers still expect lower prices, and that equation is difficult to sustain.

The Panel Problem

Perhaps the most important factor is one many consumers never see: most television brands no longer control the most expensive component inside the television: the display panel itself.

Many manufacturers rely on external suppliers for LCD or OLED panels. That means a significant portion of the value chain and profit opportunity, belongs elsewhere.

Companies that control display manufacturing enjoy major advantages, and don’t often find themselves squeezed between suppliers above them and retailers below them.

Why TCL Keeps Appearing in the Story

If we look closely at recent television industry headlines, one name keeps resurfacing: TCL. This company isn’t simply another television brand, it’s actually a manufacturing powerhouse.

So Sony turned to TCL and Panasonic shifted production responsibilities to Skyworth, another Chinese giant operating within the same manufacturing ecosystem. This broader trend is unmistakable: television manufacturing is increasingly concentrating among a small number of massive Chinese production specialists capable of operating at scales competitors struggle to match.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Sony or Panasonic will disappear, but that their future may increasingly resemble the modern smartphone industry, where design, software, branding, and user experience matter more than owning every stage of production.

The Television Is No Longer the Business

This may be the industry’s biggest transformation, because while historically the television was the business, today, it is often a gateway to advertising revenue, streaming partnerships, subscription services, gaming ecosystems and content recommendations.

The hardware itself has become a platform to generate better margins from the physical products. This shift explains why some companies are willing to sell televisions with extremely low hardware profits. This model promotes their screen to get into our home, enabling their ecosystem to generate recurring revenue later.

The End of an Era, or the Beginning of a New One?

The television industry’s story isn’t really about failure. It’s about commoditization. When a technology becomes universal, it often becomes less profitable. Just like airlines that routinely struggle financially, TV manufacturers may be entering the same category. They are everywhere and indispensable, so they have become extraordinarily difficult to profit from.

That brings us back to Sony that announced recently the TCL-Sony joint venture as a corporate restructuring. I find it as a symbol of a larger industry reality, analysing that partnership is a better future than going alone. When looking at history, Pioneer is gone, Philips left manufacturing behind, Panasonic outsourced production and Sony partnered with TCL.

One by one, the old heroes have stepped aside, and the companies which stand at the center of the modern television battlefield, like TCL, Hisense, Samsung, find a growing network of Chinese manufacturing giants that have mastered the one thing that increasingly matters most: scale.

In the end, the television industry’s great paradox remains intact: TVs have never been bigger, their technology has never been better, and consumers have never had more choice. Yet for many manufacturers, the economics have never been tougher.

That is the paradox at the heart of modern television manufacturing, and the reason so many legendary brands have chosen to step away from the factory floor. In the television industry, popularity is no longer enough.

Scale is what matters now.

TV Manufacturering profitability is collapsing as Sony, Panasonic and Philips retreat, revealing why one of the world’s most popular products struggles financially.

[18
26,9
post-2252","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tvs-projectors","tag-analysis","tag-featured

<meta property="og:site_name" content="Tech & Audio - Expert reviews and insights on the latest tech and audio gadgets from TVs, stereo systems, and speakers to headphones, computers, and cutting-edge devices.
