The TCL Q7D RGB Mini LED, QM7L in the USA equivalent, in its 75 inch configuration, falls somewhere between those two categories, delivering a noticeably different picture from the C7L I reviewed previously, even though much of the underlying hardware and smart TV experience remains unchanged.

After testing the C7L, which uses TCL’s Super Quantum Dot Mini LED technology, I replaced it with the Q7D RGB on the same day and under the same viewing conditions. Because the new TV occupied exactly the same position as the previous model, I could compare the two directly, without relying on long term memory or footage captured from different screens under different conditions.

The result was an interesting demonstration of how much the underlying display technology can influence the viewing experience, even when the rest of the television remains largely familiar. Before getting to the final verdict, however, it is worth understanding what makes the Q7D RGB different, where its advantages become apparent, and where the newer model does not necessarily come out ahead.

RGB Mini LED: What Has Actually Changed?

The TCL Q7D RGB takes a different approach to backlighting than the C7L I reviewed recently, which uses a conventional Quantum Dot Mini LED architecture. The goal of RGB Mini LED is to expand the display’s ability to reproduce rich, vivid colors while maintaining high brightness, although the practical results depend on more than the backlighting technology alone.

Read my TCL C7L review here.

In conventional Mini LED televisions, the backlight typically relies on blue light, with optical layers and color conversion technologies, including Quantum Dot materials, helping produce the colors displayed on the screen.

RGB Mini LED takes a different approach by incorporating red, green, and blue light sources into the backlight system. This allows the television to control not only the intensity of light across different areas of the screen, but also the color composition of the backlight itself.

In practical terms, this architecture offers the potential for particularly vivid colors and intense highlights, while reducing reliance on the same color conversion approach used in conventional Mini LED systems. The real question, of course, is how much of that potential translates into a better picture when watching actual content.

TCL claims coverage of up to 100 percent of the BT.2020 color space under its stated test conditions. That is an impressive specification, but color gamut coverage alone does not guarantee accurate colors in everyday viewing. Calibration, image processing, and the way the television handles different types of content remain important factors in the final result.

According to the manufacturer’s specifications for the 75 inch version I tested, the Q7D RGB uses an HVA Pro panel, a backlight system with 1,344 color zones, and HDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits. It supports 4K resolution at refresh rates of up to 144Hz, with support for up to 288Hz in VRR mode at 1080p.

The Q7D RGB is therefore not simply a C7L with its color saturation turned up in the picture settings. It represents a change in the display technology itself, specifically the way the backlight produces and manages light and color. As the following tests demonstrate, that distinction becomes particularly relevant in scenes combining intense highlights, saturated colors, and fine details against dark backgrounds.

TCL Q7D RGB: Design and Build Quality

The TCL Q7D RGB continues TCL’s familiar design language, with relatively slim bezels, but there is one noticeable difference compared with the C7L: the frame has a brushed aluminum finish that gives the television a more premium appearance.

The brushed aluminum finish gives the frame a more refined look

Despite that more upscale finish, the Q7D RGB does not demand attention when the screen is off, allowing it to blend into a living room without becoming a dominant design feature.

Like the C7L, the Q7D RGB has slim edges, which help maintain a clean, minimalist appearance when the television is wall mounted. The construction combines plastic and metal, balancing a practical overall weight with a solid structure.

The picture begins approximately one centimeter from the side edges

The television uses standard VESA mounting points, and for this review I installed it on the wall rather than testing the stability of the supplied feet. If you are replacing an older television, it is worth checking whether your existing wall mount supports the new model’s dimensions and weight, because a mount that worked with your previous TV will not necessarily be suitable for the Q7D RGB.

Wall mount installation

Replacing the C7L in the same room also gave me a useful advantage during testing. Both televisions were viewed from the same distance and in the same environment, making it easier to identify differences in the picture without having to rely on impressions formed days or weeks apart.

TCL Q7D RGB: Connectivity and Wireless Features

The Q7D RGB offers the same general connectivity arrangement found on the C7L and C7K. There are four HDMI inputs, two supporting HDMI 2.1 features for 4K at up to 144Hz with VRR, and two HDMI 2.0 inputs supporting 4K at 60Hz. One of the HDMI 2.1 inputs also supports eARC for connecting an external soundbar or audio system.

When connecting a compatible PC, HDMI inputs 1 and 2 support 4K at 144Hz, with refresh rates of up to 288Hz available at 1080p. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and ALLM are also supported, making the television an interesting option for gamers who want high refresh rates and variable refresh rate support without moving to a dedicated gaming monitor.

Beyond HDMI, the rear panel includes an Ethernet port, an optical audio output, and an antenna input. Wireless connectivity is unchanged from the C7K and C7L, with Bluetooth 5.4 and WiFi 5.

The detachable power cable is another practical detail, particularly for wall mounted installations where the cable needs to be routed through a conduit inside the wall to keep the installation neat and free of visible wiring.

As with the previous model, it is worth planning your connections before installation, especially if you intend to use an external audio system through eARC, a dedicated streaming device, and several HDMI sources at the same time.

The rear panel provides the television’s main connectivity options

TCL Q7D RGB: Hardware and Processing

One of the more interesting findings during my testing was that, despite the substantial change in display technology, the underlying hardware platform remains unchanged from the C7L.

The processor, RAM, internal storage, and graphics hardware all appear to follow the same configuration, meaning that the Q7D RGB does not represent a parallel leap in basic computing performance. The primary upgrade is in the display system and the way the backlight produces and manages light and color, rather than in the processing power available to the smart TV platform.

To examine the hardware, I installed an application that reports detailed system information on Google TV devices. The results indicated the same hardware configuration found in the C7K and C7L, including a MediaTek MT5896 processor, 2.5GB of RAM, 49GB of storage, and a Mali G52 graphics processor.

The hardware configuration appears to match that of the C7L

The processor naming deserves a little clarification, because these identifiers can be confusing. The MT5896 is associated with MediaTek’s Pentonic 700 family, including an X2 variant of the platform. Based on the hardware information available on the television, there is no obvious increase in basic processing resources compared with the C7K or C7L.

The more meaningful distinction appears to be how TCL uses its system on a chip, image processing, and software algorithms to work with the RGB backlight, rather than the introduction of a more powerful processor.

That distinction was consistent with my everyday experience. The interface, responsiveness, and general operating speed felt much the same as on the previous model, yet the picture itself looked noticeably different.

Google TV

Google TV remains one of the Q7D RGB’s strengths. Once connected to a Google account and the home network, the home screen brings together recommendations and content from services such as Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, and Apple TV.

The interface is familiar, logical, and easy to navigate, and moving between applications does not require any adjustment if you have used recent TCL televisions before. The Google Play Store provides access to a broad selection of additional applications, while the available storage leaves room to install more services according to your needs.

In my experience, the interface was relatively responsive once the television had finished loading, with minimal noticeable delay during everyday use. The range of applications is extensive, and the reported 49GB of storage is generous for a television in this category.

As with any smart TV, however, performance over time will also depend on software updates and how individual applications are maintained.

TCL Q7D RGB: Power Consumption

For the 75 inch model, TCL lists maximum power consumption of 370 watts during operation.

MAX power consumption

Streaming from a Home Network

I also tested playback from a DLNA media server running on a computer on my home network, using the VLC application installed on the television.

The Q7D RGB provided the same basic user experience I was familiar with from the C7L, without requiring an external media player simply to enjoy high quality content streamed across the network.

What surprised me was how well the television handled demanding files. Almost every high bitrate movie I tested played smoothly, including files with bitrates of approximately 40Mbps that had stuttered on the C7L but streamed almost flawlessly on the Q7D RGB.

That result was particularly interesting given that the hardware configuration appeared unchanged. I cannot attribute the improvement to a specific component based on these tests alone, but the practical outcome was clear: the Q7D RGB handled the files I tried considerably better.

I often recommend a dedicated streaming device to viewers who want the greatest possible playback compatibility, particularly with demanding high bitrate content. In this case, however, the television itself provided sufficiently reliable playback that I would be comfortable recommending its built in streaming capabilities to users who maintain a high quality media library on their home network.

TCL Q7D RGB Remote Control

The remote is identical in design and functionality to the one supplied with the C7K and C7L. It includes dedicated buttons for popular streaming services, volume controls, voice activation, and quick access to different inputs.

It is made of plastic and does not have a backlight, but it puts the main controls within easy reach and does not require users to learn a new layout if they are already familiar with TCL televisions.

For me, this is one of those everyday details that matters over years of ownership. A good remote does not necessarily have to look expensive, but it should make common tasks easy to perform without requiring unnecessary navigation through menus.

A functional remote that keeps the main controls within easy reach

Onkyo Audio Instead of Bang & Olufsen

Sound is one of the most important differences between the Q7D RGB and the C7L, and it is also a good example of why a specification sheet does not tell the whole story.

I was impressed by the C7L’s Bang & Olufsen audio system, which delivered a sense of depth, presence, and separation that was unusually convincing for the built in speakers of a slim television. The Q7D RGB instead features a 2.1 channel audio system under the Onkyo brand.

In my listening tests, the Q7D RGB sounded very good compared with the Samsung and LG television models I had tested, but it was considerably less impressive than the C7L with its Bang & Olufsen system.

I did not need a carefully selected playlist to identify the difference, because it was apparent across different types of content, particularly in the perceived weight and fullness behind voices, music, and sound effects. Dialogue remained clear and easy to understand, but when music, effects, and lower frequencies came together, the Q7D RGB lacked some of the physical presence and excitement that I had enjoyed with the C7L.

For everyday viewing, including news, talk shows, and occasional television series, the built in audio should be perfectly adequate for many people. Those who care more about cinematic sound or immersive gaming audio, however, may want to consider a soundbar or a separate audio system.

The Q7D RGB supports Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital, as well as DTS formats, including DTS:X. This is a notable advantage for users with compatible content and equipment, especially because Samsung and LG omit DTS support from their television lineups.

Onkyo 2.1 speaker system

Picture Quality: A Noticeable Step Up in Color

I will not keep you waiting for the main finding: the most obvious difference between the Q7D RGB and the C7L appeared in the colors, which looked more intense, and in the white highlights, which appeared especially bright.

That immediate impact is also where the challenge begins. The picture in the default settings can look excessively bright, with white highlights that sometimes appear too intense. To get the most from the Q7D RGB, I found that spending time adjusting the picture settings was essential rather than simply accepting the factory configuration.

I reduced the light output to a level that remained impressive without dominating the image, then adjusted the color settings to preserve the richness of the RGB presentation while bringing the overall picture closer to a natural balance. After those changes, the image became more comfortable to watch while retaining the distinctive advantages of the new backlighting technology.

Switching directly between the two televisions also illustrated how much the viewing experience can change when the display technology changes, even when the processor, operating system, and much of the underlying hardware remain the same.

In scenes featuring strong sunlight, artificial lighting, or reflections on glossy surfaces, the Q7D RGB could create a particularly powerful impression of brightness. Highlights stood out, and the picture had a vivid presence that made these scenes immediately engaging.

Black levels and contrast still need to be understood in the context of the underlying LCD technology. Unlike OLED, where each pixel produces its own light, the Q7D RGB relies on a backlight divided into local dimming zones. Its ability to control light depends on the backlight system and how the television manages transitions between bright and dark parts of the image.

RGB Mini LED adds another dimension by allowing the color composition of the backlight to be controlled, but it does not give every individual pixel the same independent control over light that OLED provides.

The direct comparison with the C7L under the same viewing conditions made these differences easier to recognize. The Q7D RGB has a distinct visual character, with particularly vivid color and powerful highlights, but the best results come when those strengths are balanced through the picture settings.

HDR: When Content Makes the Most of the Display

The Q7D RGB supports the major HDR formats, including HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. This matters because HDR content can take advantage of a wider range of brightness and color, allowing the television to present a greater distinction between darker areas and bright highlights when the source material and display capabilities work together.

TCL’s support for Dolby Vision alongside HDR10 and HDR10+ also provides flexibility when choosing content across streaming services and other sources.

Samsung, by comparison, does not support Dolby Vision on its televisions, relying instead on other HDR formats. For viewers who use a variety of streaming services, TCL’s broader format compatibility means they are less likely to encounter a situation where their television lacks support for the HDR format offered by a particular title.

Of course, format compatibility alone does not guarantee better HDR performance. The actual result still depends on the television’s brightness, local dimming behavior, color reproduction, and processing, all of which influence the final picture.

Looking Closely at Pixel Behavior Under an Electronic Microscope

During my earlier testing of the C7L, I used an electronic microscope at two magnification levels, 300x and 1,600x, to examine the pixel structure and its behavior as the displayed image changed in brightness.

The footage provides a close look at the display structure, including changes associated with different illumination levels, from a completely dark appearance to brighter states depending on the content being shown.

In the second video, recorded at 1,600x magnification, the subpixel structure and the way the elements operate in groups can be seen more clearly. The footage also illustrates the ability of an OLED display to turn off individual pixels completely, allowing it to produce deep blacks without residual light from those pixels.

These microscope videos relate to the earlier C7L testing and provide additional context on display technology. They should not be interpreted as evidence that the Q7D RGB, which is an LCD television with a Mini LED backlight, can turn off each pixel independently in the same way as OLED.

Real World Viewing Tests

I began the viewing tests with a scene from Avatar: Fire and Ash, which combines an especially bright background with a partially silhouetted character, rich colors, and prominent flashes of light.

The transitions between dark areas and powerful light sources make the sequence useful for evaluating whether the display can preserve shadow detail while producing bright highlights without disrupting the overall balance of the image. The Q7D RGB delivered a rich and impressive picture, with good separation between illuminated and darker areas.

Next, I moved to a dark action sequence from Predator: Badlands, featuring substantial movement and visual effects under relatively low lighting conditions.

The combination of dark backgrounds, localized sources of light, and rapid changes between frames creates a demanding test of contrast handling, motion, and the preservation of detail during complex sequences.

The Q7D RGB handled the scene very well overall, although there was a moment in the most visually demanding passages when image processing struggled slightly to maintain complete consistency.

For the final test, I selected what I found to be the most frightening sequence in End of Oak Street, in which Anne Hathaway nearly falls victim to the T. rex. The rapid action places considerable demands on image processing, while the combination of dark surroundings and intense highlights creates another opportunity to examine the display’s handling of contrast.

Here, the Q7D RGB produced deep looking blacks, good separation between areas of different brightness, and, most importantly, precise image processing that helped intensify the viewing experience.

<iframe title="The End of Oak Street | Trapped By A T-Rex | Movie Clip | Warner Bros. A high brightness display can help the picture remain visible in a well lit room, but it cannot eliminate the reflection of a lamp, window, or glass cabinet positioned opposite the screen.

The Q7D RGB was no less susceptible to reflections than the C7L. This means that the placement of the television remains just as important as its picture settings, particularly in rooms with large windows, glass furniture, or lighting directly in front of the display.

Reflections are especially noticeable when the television is turned off and during dark scenes, when the black surface of the screen can act much like a mirror. For anyone planning to install the Q7D RGB in a bright living room, it is worth considering the position of windows and lighting before deciding where the television should go.

The Elephant in the Room: Is This a Preview of Sony BRAVIA’s Future?

There is a much bigger question surrounding the Q7D RGB, and it is one that goes beyond the television itself. As TCL pushes forward with RGB Mini LED, are we simply looking at another advanced television from a Chinese manufacturer, or could this technology offer an early glimpse of the future of Sony BRAVIA?

In January 2026, Sony and TCL announced their intention to establish a joint venture that would take over Sony’s home entertainment business, including its television operations. Under the proposed arrangement, TCL is expected to own 51 percent of the new company, with Sony holding the remaining 49 percent.

The agreement was signed in April, and operations are expected to begin in 2027, subject to the necessary conditions and approvals. During my visit to Sony’s offices in the United Kingdom earlier this year, I was told that the start of production would happen considerably sooner than initially expected.

In other words, a company that competes directly with Sony in the television market is expected to become the majority owner of the new business responsible for Sony’s home entertainment products.

That makes the Q7D RGB particularly interesting. If TCL is already developing and manufacturing televisions based on RGB Mini LED technology, could a future generation of BRAVIA televisions adopt a similar display architecture, combined with Sony’s image processing, algorithms, and calibration expertise?

Could we eventually see a television that draws on TCL’s display technology while retaining the software approach and image processing associated with BRAVIA? Or will the two product lines continue to differ substantially despite their new business relationship?

For now, it would be premature to suggest that the Q7D RGB is a prototype for a future Sony television. The planned joint venture does not, by itself, confirm which display technologies will be used in upcoming BRAVIA models, and there is no guarantee that Sony’s next RGB television will share the same platform or performance characteristics as this TCL.

Nevertheless, the possibility is fascinating. If the planned arrangement proceeds, 2027 could mark a turning point in the relationship between TCL’s display technology and the BRAVIA brand.

And perhaps, when we eventually review a new RGB television carrying the Sony name, we will look back at the Q7D RGB and wonder whether we had already seen the first hint of what was coming.

Read my full report on the Sony and TCL agreement here.

Final Verdict

The TCL Q7D RGB demonstrates how a change in display technology can have a substantial effect on the viewing experience, even when much of the television’s underlying hardware remains unchanged.

In my direct comparison with the C7L, the TCL Q7D RGB’s most noticeable strengths were its more intense colors and powerful impression of brightness, particularly in scenes combining rich colors with exceptionally bright highlights.

However, this is not an upgrade in every respect. Getting the most balanced picture required some adjustment of the factory settings, and the Onkyo audio system could not reproduce the depth and presence I enjoyed from the C7L’s Bang & Olufsen system. The rest of the user experience remains familiar, including Google TV, the connectivity options, and the basic hardware platform.

For viewers who prioritize vivid color and impressive brightness, and who are willing to spend some time adjusting the picture settings, the TCL Q7D RGB is an interesting proposition. Those who place equal importance on built in sound should compare it carefully with the C7L before making a purchase.

What makes the Q7D RGB particularly interesting is that RGB Mini LED is more than another specification on a product sheet. It represents a different approach to producing color and light, and it raises a compelling question about the future of the television industry.

Will we see similar technology in future Sony BRAVIA televisions? It is too early to know, but after testing the Q7D RGB, it is certainly a possibility worth watching.

Ultimately, the TCL Q7D RGB offers a distinctive viewing experience built around the potential of RGB Mini LED, with vivid colors, strong brightness, familiar smart TV features, and a few compromises that prospective buyers should understand before making their decision.

Check Price on Amazon

Check the latest price on Amazon.com

TechAndAudio.Com may earn a commission if you purchase through links in this article, at no additional cost to you.
